July 9th & 23rd, 2019                 Family House Meal Program Participation


Midtown Kiwanis provided a meal for all of the guests staying at Family House. These dinners allow Family House guests to relax, while alleviating the worries of transportation, grocery shopping, and the hassle of preparing a meal after a long day of traveling or spending hours at the hospital.

October 17, 2019                        Midtown Kiwanis Banquet 2019

     

A great time was on the menu at our annual Midtown Kiwanis Banquet.  We were able to celebrate with several of our Key Club members and their Advisors from Sanderson High School and Ravenscroft High School.  We were visited by our current Division Lt. Governor (and Governor elect for the Carolinas District) as he inducted our new officers including President Eloise Mayberry.  We were also fortunate enough to induct another Division Lt. Governor from our very own group, Steve Mayberry, who will serve the 2019-2020 year.  Max Rodden was given the honor of Kiwanian of the year for all his efforts and he will serve as the Division Lt. Governor elect for the 2020-2021 term.

January 8, 2020                       Regular Meeting at North Hills Club   

          

Today we welcomed Brian Mehlman, board member with Wake Monarch Academy.  When opened it will be the first recovery high school in the Raleigh area and they are currently fundraising for long term stability for youth hoping to finish their high school education while remaining sober.  Check out their website for more information and ways to contribute.  https://www.wakemonarchacademy.org/

 

       

Today was the day of giving.  We presented The Lymphoma & Leukemia Society with a check for $5,000 which was a direct result of our hugely successful Annual Midtown Kiwanis Poker Tournament.  Pictured are our current President (Eloise Mayberry), poker tournament chairman (Blake Phillips), poker tournament coordinator (Laura Berra) and LLS staff member (Khaki Stelton).

 

February, 2020                  Carolina Kiwanis Midyear Convention

Several of our members attended the Carolinas Kiwanis Midyear Convention in Charlotte, NC.  Fellowship and learning presented a great opportunity to learn more about what Kiwanis does and can do for our community and beyond.

We continue to demonstrate that you can do good even in quarentine.  Several of our members participated in a local blood drive.  Our members donated gift cards from our annual Poker Tournament to the Boys & Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw.  Additionally, we provided gift cards to the Raleigh Boys & Girls Club to help with their needs during this difficult time and finding ways to engage children while keeping safe.  Finally we collected and delivered food supplies for North Raleigh Ministries.  Our speaker today was Stefani Despagni discussing how to use our personal space time wisely by gardening in your own front yard.  Join us again soon.

        

 

June 24, 2020                             Zoom Online Meeting

Today we celebrated our scholarship winners through our partnership with the BBB.  Our money help fund the next generations opportunity to make the world a better place to live.  Our speaker today was Adam Hartzell with Southlight.  Southlight is a non profit organization for substance use and recovery services.  They are celebrating 50 years and we learned about all the opportunities they have for treatment.   https://www.southlight.org/

Kristen Wendover a 5th grade teacher at Sycamore Creek Elementary School in Raleigh educated us about remote learning and the difficulties for students, parents and students.

                                       

September 18th, 2020                      Officer Installation

Our Annual Officer Installation Banquet looked a bit different this year.  We identified all the wonderful activities and events we participated including food drives, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, dictionary deliveries for 3rd graders in Wake County and serving meals to the SECU house in Chapel Hill.  It was a wonderful opportunity to see all things possible with social distancing.  Our new slate of officers including incoming President Doug Boggie will officially take office October 1, 2020.

Today we welcomed Shana Filter, Director of Development with the Salvation Army of Wake County.  Shana provided us with information on giving and volunteer opportunities.  Midtown Kiwanis participates in the Annual Angel Tree giving and Ringing the Bell in their kettle campaign.

Our speaker today was Heath Placeck from the nonprofit ministry, Prison Alliance speaking to us about outreach within our prisons during Covid-19 times.

Our speaker today was Michael Kirchner who provided us with Youth Protection training for our members to be able to work with our youth in middle, high school and university settings.

Today was a planning meeting to discuss our role with the Sanderson Key Club in reaching their 400 service hours this month.  We learned about the Kiwanis Mid Winter Conference and their information regarding cultural diversity and member recruitment.

Stephanie Treadway with Redirection NC spoke with us regarding assistance for women who have been released from prison.  She started this wonderful organization to help with the transitional housing.  Support comes from donations and grants.

Sarah Caldwell with Note in the Pocket spoke with us regarding their efforts in Wake County. This organization provides clothing to homeless and impoverished students and their families to participate more confidently in school and worklife.  Additionally, we confirmed our upcoming Service Project of a Kickball Tournament with The Boys & Girls Club on July 7th 2021.

We were delighted to have Mary Winfree, our Carolinas District Membership Chair, speak to our club today about sharing Kiwanis with friends and associates who are interested in being active in the community and helping children.  She reminded us that especially during these times of Covid-19 people are looking for opportunities to be connected and to volunteer.

We had a great meeting with our Kiwanis Governor, Chris White. He gave a great overview about how the Kiwanis District is making plans to have in person meetings & activities.  He encouraged our Board of Directors to investigate how best to get our club back to meeting in person.

Cerretta Amos & Shameka Rolla, with Smith Anderson Law Firm, spoke with our group about the Know Your Rights law training they do for youth in Raleigh schools on behalf of the North Carolina Bar Association. They recently did the training for the Boys & Girls Clubs and for the NC State Football Team.

Ashley Glimasinski with Welcome House Raleigh, spoke with our group about being a temporary reception house for refugees coming to the triangle area training without housing.  Welcome House prvides a safe home, settlement assistance and bridges into the community.

Our group assisted North Raleigh Ministries in sorting clothes & items to sell in their thrift store.  All proceeds go to help families & children with essential needs and food.

Chris McDonald with Path to Hope Counseling spoke about the benefits of yoga and meditative practices in managing emotional health. Chris instructed us in some simple chair yoga exercises we can use immediately to reduce tension and calm our inner self.

 

September 14, 2021

A great time was on the menu at our annual Midtown Kiwanis Banquet.  We were able to celebrate with several of our Key Club members from Sanderson High School.  Past Lt. Governor Blake Phillips inducted our new officers including President Johnny Glover and Vice President Larry Mathiot.  We were also fortunate enough to receive an award for Distinguished Lt. Governor for our very own, Steve Mayberry.  Ed Roche was given the honor of Kiwanian of the year for his efforts during the 2021 year.

                    

 

 

October 27, 2021                                         Regular Meeting

Our very own member, Richard Hart spoke about his role with "Listen Up" which provides mentor type relationships with middle school children.  Members visit schools during specific periods in the day and listen to what the children want to talk about.  The program has been such a success it has has been replicated over many middle schools in the area and featured in our September issue Kiwanis International Magazine.

 

December 5, 2021

Fellowship is a wonderful part of being a Kiwanian.  Our group met for our annual Holiday Celebration. Fun was had by all and invigorated our commitment to serving children and youth in our community.

Morgan Browne with Transitions Life Care (formerly Wake Hospice) spoke about volunteer opportunities.  Our own, Steve Mayberry shared his work with providing emotional support animal visits to hospital patients.

We had a wonderful program on the North Carolina Youth Suicide Prevention Campaign at Midtown Kiwanis today. Such an important topic for better communities. It's OK to Ask .

Our Carolinas District Governor Joe Crostic visited our club to talk about increasing our out of the box thinking for getting volunteers and people to join our clubs.

 

September 16 & 17, 2022

Our group made their way to North Raleigh Ministries to volunteer in their thrift store.  We always have a great time and realize there is so much need for such a great cause.

          

 

October 2, 2022

Our group held its annual banquet to recognize our community efforts. We were able to provide support to LLS from the proceeds of our Annual Poker Tournament, as well as, other programs within the Kiwanis family and community.  Our District Governor Joe Crostic installed our newest officers and retired those who have diligently served during the past year.  Our Kiwanian of the Year, Blake Phillips, was recognized for his efforts wtih sponsorship, member growth and in event participation.
